BYO Thursdays
ZamZam Foundation
The idea is simple. If you wish to pay corkage select your amount and 100% of the proceeds will go to our chosen organisation for the month.
ZamZam Foundation is a registered charity organisation that empowers women and girls in Afghanistan and ACT through education and advocacy. The organisation supports local-led initiatives for education in Afghanistan; runs small community projects in the ACT in collaboration with the Afghan diaspora and Canberra community, including a women's group which funds driving and swimming lessons; fosters partnerships for change; and advocates for the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
After the Taliban seized control of Kabul in August 2021, the human rights situation of women and girls in Afghanistan deteriorated severely. Since then, the Taliban has been increasingly introducing new restrictions with the apparent aim of completely erasing women's and girls' presence from public arenas. Taliban policies oppress women and girls in almost all aspects of their lives. Any meaningful form of public or political participation by women and girls is now prohibited.
ZamZam Foundation's founder, Dr Nilofar Ebrahimi, is a former member of the Afghanistan Parliament and fled to Canberra following the Taliban's takeover. During her time as a member of parliament in Afghanistan, Dr Ebrahimi ran multiple programs to support girls from low socio-economic backgrounds, to ensure that they had access to education and opportunities outside of the family home. Dr Ebrahimi's work has always had a particular focus on girls in single-parent households, and who were orphaned, understanding the greater challenges such girls face. Besides running ZamZam, Dr Ebrahimi also currently works as a Community Educator and Health Promotion Officer at a local community organisation. She is recently nominated for a 2025 ACT Multicultural Award for the incredible education and support work she has done with the Afghani community.
ZamZam Foundation receives no government funding for its work in Afghanistan. Regular and one-off donations from supporters are vital in allowing the organisation to carry out our work in Afghanistan. 100% of any money raised through Pilot BYO Thursdays would go to the ZamZam-funded schools for women and girls in Afghanistan.
